Why MeterBridge
The Smart Meter must be where it needs to measure.
Not where the communication cable can reach.
The correct placement of the Smart Meter is determined by the PV system topology, not by the availability of communication cabling.
The problem with conventional cabling
The Smart Meter must be installed at a common point before the electrical distribution splits into individual branches in order to correctly measure the total energy flow. In practice, its correct location may be tens of metres away from the PV inverter or even in a different part of the building.
When a new communication cable is not an option
Installing an additional RS485 cable between the Smart Meter and the PV inverter may require modifications to the existing electrical installation, construction work, or routing a cable through areas where this is impractical or impossible. Distance itself is not the problem – the problem is the lack of a suitable communication route.
The MeterBridge solution
MeterBridge is designed for installations where the required location of the Smart Meter and the location of the PV inverter make a practical RS485 cable connection difficult or impossible.
At its core is the PV Communicator UNI V3.0, which together with a pair of LoRa radios creates a wireless communication bridge between the Smart Meter and the PV inverter. RS485 / Modbus RTU communication is preserved on both sides.
